Procedures and deadlines for application to a Master of Science programme (Laurea Specialistica/Magistrale) for EU citizens wherever residing, non-EU citizens with residence permit in Italy and Italian citizens with secondary school title awarded abroad

Admission to Master of Science programmes starting in October 2007 is open to graduates who by the end of August will earn a recognised degree, at least at the Bachelor level, or will have completed the equivalent of 180 ECTS credits at a recognized institution. EU citizens wherever resident, non-EU citizens with a valid residence permit to be in Italy and Italian citizens with a secondary school title awarded abroad may be admitted to graduate degree courses under the same conditions as Italian students.

The admission process should follow two progressive stages:

Note: Students who wish to be considered for a scholarship, must fill in the on-line application and produce all documentation by March 30th 2007, following the procedure described on the site, related to non-Eu students.

The application period for EU citizens wherever residing, non-EU citizens with a residence permit in Italy, and Italian citizens with secondary school titles awarded abroad is divided in two stages.

1st Stage: Admission procedure (A, B)

A. Admission Period Reserved for International Candidates
>> October 25th, 2006 – March 30th, 2007
: During the international admission period, applicants will also be considered for scholarships offered to all international students and will receive notification on the admissions decision by the beginning of May.

B. Admission Period Reserved for Italian and EU candidates or non-EU candidates with a Residence Permit in Italy
>> End of August – mid September, 2007
: Applicants choosing this admissions period will generally not receive an admissions decision until the end of September or the beginning of October, along with Italian candidates.

Naturally, all the foreign students and the Italian citizens with secondary school titles awarded abroad are allowed and encouraged to apply in the period described at Point A, in order:

  • to facilitate planning for the upcoming academic year,
  • to leave open the possibility of being awarded scholarships,
  • to allow the necessary time to find accommodation and take advantage of the Politecnico di Milano University’s student support services.

A. Admission Period Reserved for International Candidates
>> Application on-line (1st stage: Oct 25th, 2006 – Mar 30th, 2007)

This first stage is aimed at evaluating the applicant's profile and formulating a response to his/her application. First of all, the applicant has to fill out the online application form. Before filling in this form, please read all the information below:

  1. Once you have started to enter the information on the on-line application, you will not be able to save the partial completion and then return to it at another moment, so please have all the information requested at hand while you are completing the application.
  2. Candidates are reminded to conserve a paper copy of the on-line application receipt given at the moment of the completion of the online application. A copy of this receipt must be signed and sent in with the application dossier. Furthermore, it is with the username and password contained on this receipt that candidates will be able to check on the status of their applications at the end of the evaluation period.
  3. Candidates should use their username and password to check on the admission status of their applications about two weeks after the application dossier has been sent to the admissions office to check that the application has been received and is complete. From that point on, candidates should check periodically to inform themselves on the decision of the evaluation committee.
  4. Before completing the on-line application, please have a look at the following PDF of a sample application, in order to understand what information you will need to successfully complete the on-line application:

  5. The PDF document in point 4 contains not only a sample of the application, but also a checklist of the documents (which is also given below) you will need to send to the admissions office concurrently with your on-line application. This PDF also gives instructions on the writing of the letter of motivation (max 2 pages), which is an extremely important part of the candidate’s dossier.

On-line application form

Dossier

The documents listed below must be sent concurrently with your on-line application and will be evaluated for admission by an internal committee composed of professors from each programme applied to. The deadline for the application is mid September, thus any application not received from our office by that time, will NOT be considered.
Remember that the earlier you send in your application and material, the better the possibility of having an early response regarding admission. Furthermore, keep in mind that applications received after March 30th, 2007 will not be considered for international student scholarships and admissions decisions will most probably not be communicated until October.

Please separate the documentation into the sections given below. Place all documentation, unfolded, in ONE large envelope. For EACH study choice you have made, you must include a folder consisting of PHOTOCOPIES of your application material (exception: documents in sealed envelopes such as transcripts or letters of recommendation, which the admissions office will open, verify, and photocopy). In other words, if you have applied for a first and second Laurea Specialistica/Magistrale choice, your application packet should consist of 1 folder of original documentation for the admissions office and 2 folders of documentation for the specific programmes. Include in each folder only the letter of motivation specific for that programme.

2nd Stage: Entry to the Politecnico di Milano

At the beginning of the academic year, admitted students will have to submit to Politecnico di Milano (at the Registrar's Office) the following official or certified documents:

Necessary documents:

  1. A diploma (equivalent to a Bachelor degree) in original or a certified copy, translated into Italian and legalized by the Italian Diplomatic Representation (Generally an Embassy or Consulate), which will be returned to the applicant, or a post-secondary qualification awarded by a Higher Institute (that is not a University) that allows the student to undertake university studies at the successive level. This alternative is valid only in cases where the secondary school qualification has been obtained following a period of at least 12 years of education. Students that are currently enrolled in 5-year degree programmes following a period of at least 12 years of education and have obtained the equivalent of 180 ECTS credits may be considered for admission to Master of Science programmes at the discretion of the University.
  2. A certified academic transcript issued directly by the university, translated into Italian and legalized by the Italian Diplomatic Representation and confirming the examinations passed.
  3. The detailed study programmes and the number of hours for each course/training activity in the academic curriculum. For the Politecnico di Milano University, it is sufficient to have this document in the form described in the 1st stage above.
  4. The "Declaration of value" (Dichiarazione di valore) related to the Bachelor Degree or equivalent, issued by the Italian Embassy or Consulate
  5. Any certificate attesting to the Italian language proficiency (this document is not needed if students are applying for programmes entirely taught in English)
  6. Two passport size photographs
  7. Photocopy of ID card or passport and, only for Non-Eu citizens residing in Italy, copy of residence permit or residence card.

All documents written in a foreign language, apart from the detailed study programmes, must be accompanied by an official translation in Italian. Any information about official translations is available at the Embassy, Consulate, or Istituto Italiano di Cultura. Candidates who apply during the Point B application period should, due to possible late admissions decisions, be sure to prepare the above-mentioned documentation (in particular the documentation indicated by points 1, 2, 3 and possibly 5) in advance in order to complete the required procedures as quickly as possible with the Embassy/Consulate/IIC.

Upon arrival in Italy, all admitted students who applied during the Admission Period for International Candidates should present themselves to the Welcome Desk of their respective campuses to begin the enrolment procedure. Instructions will at that point be given to admitted students concerning the next steps to follow.

We remind the applicant that, if an eventually admitted individual does not supply the Politecnico di Milano University with the complete documentation mentioned above upon registration, the admitted individual will not be able to enroll.
